Larping towards a plurality of knowledge–
And the preservation of knowledge produced in ephemeral play
Larping towards a plurality of knowledge is an essay reflecting on live action role-playing and knowledge production. It was written during my participation in the research group Politics of Knowledge led by Dr. Anke Haarmann at the Royal Academy of the Arts, The Hague 2022-2024.
LARP, an acronym for live-action role-play, is a form of participatory media, collaborative world-building, or a simulation model of a temporary society. In a LARP, I temporarily lend my body to another character, feeling what my character feels, thinking how my character would think, and acting as my character would act. LARPing, much like sacred play, becomes a vessel for producing knowledge. Just as the oracle speaks in riddles, LARP reveals truths not through concrete facts but through embodied experiences that provoke new ways of knowing, de-centering one’s own experience as a universal one. In my research I have engaged with the challenges in accessibility and documentation of the kind of knowledge produced through •LARPing• and finding ways to carry forward the prophecies of alternative realities.
